Before the deadly tornadoes struck Kentucky in May 2024, the National Weather Service (NWS) forecast office in Jackson experienced significant staffing cuts. These reductions resulted in overnight shifts being left unstaffed due to a shortage of meteorologists, amid federal efforts to reduce government size and costs.
During the tornado outbreak, the NWS called in all available meteorologists to work overnight and coordinated warnings with emergency teams to protect residents. Officials stated that despite the cuts, the team was fully present during the crisis, demonstrating their commitment.
However, the Jackson office is not alone in facing 24/7 staffing challenges. Several other offices across the country, including those in:
- California
- Kansas
- Wyoming
- Michigan
- Alaska
- Oregon
also have overnight coverage gaps. The union representing weather service employees has warned that these shortages pose risks to public safety, especially during extreme weather events.
Since 2010, there has been a notable decrease in weather service workers, with many leaving during the early Trump administration. While neighboring offices offer backup support, experts are concerned about the impact on timely storm alerts.
