Key US government agencies, such as the FBI, State Department, and Pentagon, have told their staff not to cooperate with an email by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency initiative (Doge) asking all federal workers to record their accomplishments weekly.
The email, which was sent on Saturday, stated that failure to respond by Monday would be taken as a resignation. While some agencies advised employees to comply, other agencies advised staff to await further instruction. The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) confirmed the validity of the email but did not provide clarity on whether failure to comply would have repercussions on employment status.
Newly confirmed FBI Director Kash Patel told his agents to standby when responding to the email, whereas State and Defense agencies said that leadership would respond on behalf of those departments. The Department of Justice advised employees to ensure any answers did not sensitive information.
The American Federation of Government Employees called the action “cruel and disrespectful” and claimed they would take legal steps. Democrat legislators branded the document from Musk as illegal, while some Republicans endorsed the initiative as an audit of federal government agencies that was long overdue.
The controversy follows praise from former President Donald Trump, who urged Musk to be “more aggressive” in cutting government spending.
