New York, February 6, 2025: The United Nations has condemned former President Donald Trump’s proposal to forcibly displace Palestinians from Gaza, with spokesperson Stephane Dujarric calling it “ethnic cleansing.” Dujarric emphasized the importance of upholding international law and warned against any actions that could lead to the forced displacement of people.
In response to international outcry, officials from the Trump administration clarified that the displacement would be temporary while Gaza is rebuilt, and they did not commit to deploying U.S. troops for the operation. Despite these clarifications, the proposal has faced widespread condemnation.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres reaffirmed the necessity of a two-state solution, calling for lasting peace between Israel and Palestine. Guterres insisted that any sustainable peace must involve an independent Palestinian state, with Gaza as an integral part, and an end to the occupation.
Palestinian envoy to the UN, Riyad Mansour, called for an international conference to address the situation, which will be co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and France in June. He reiterated Palestinian rejection of Trump’s plan to take over Gaza, asserting that Gaza is an inseparable part of Palestine. Mansour also emphasized Palestinians’ desire to return to their homes in present-day Israel, from which they were displaced.
Despite the destruction of Gaza’s northern areas, including Gaza City, by Israeli military actions following the 2023 Hamas attack, many Palestinians have returned to the region under a fragile truce that has lasted since late January. However, the ongoing tensions underscore the complex and unresolved nature of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
