27 January 2025: The Trump Administration launched a nationwide immigration enforcement blitz on Sunday that included multiple federal agencies. This comprehensive operation aims to introduce significant policy changes and enforcement actions designed to strengthen border security and streamline the immigration process.

This action led to the arrest of nearly 1,000 people according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

These apprehensions are part of an effort to gather a larger enforcement apparatus by bringing in a range of federal agencies that have been granted extended immigration authority under the Trump administration.

The deployment of active-duty military personnel to the U.S.-Mexico border is one major nation taken. These troops are to support Border Patrol by handling logistical tasks by allowing agents to focus on enforcement. Moreover, the administration has suspended the CBP One app. As of 2023, the CBP One app facilitated the inclusion of unauthorized migrants seeking protection from violence, poverty, or persecution.

The “Remain in Mexico” policy, also known as the Migrant Protection Protocols, has been brought back. This requires asylum seekers to remain in Mexico while their cases are processed, a move aimed at discouraging fraudulent asylum claims. The scope of expedited removal has been expanded. It has enabled swift deportations for undocumented individuals which unable to prove 2 years of continuous U.S. residence.

Expedited removal has also been expanded in scope, allowing for the swift deportation of those who cannot demonstrate two years of continuous U.S. residence.

Interior enforcement has increased, particularly in sanctuary cities like Chicago. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has increased operations targeting undocumented individuals with final deportation orders, supported by federal agencies such as the FBI and DEA.

Public reaction is sharply divided. Supporters applaud the administration’s firm stance on immigration, viewing it as a step toward restoring law and order. Critics, however, decry the measures as excessively harsh and inhumane, arguing they violate constitutional and humanitarian principles.

This doubling down on the immigration agenda of the administration raises highly contentious implications for communities, international relations, and the U.S. broader immigration system. The operation underscores the persistent challenge of trying to balance security concerns with human rights in one of the most polarizing issues in the country.
