A batch of vine-ripe tomatoes distributed by Ray & Mascari Inc. has been recalled in 11 states due to possible salmonella contamination.
An Indianapolis, Indiana-based company is recalling its “4-Count Vine Ripe Tomatoes” in clamshell packaging due to the possibility that the products have come in contact with Salmonella.
The product recall was made by Ray & Mascari Inc. The company’s statement can be found on the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) website.
The recalled tomatoes were distributed by Gordon Food Service Stores in 11 states: Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Wisconsin, the site states.
Healthy individuals infected with Salmonella commonly have fever, diarrhea (sometimes bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal cramps,” the alert states.
“Infrequently, salmonella infection can lead to the organism gaining access to the bloodstream and causing more serious conditions like arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysm), endocarditis, and arthritis.”
Hanshaw & Capling Farms stated it “initiated the recall because of the potential for the presence of salmonella in their plant.”
The notice continues that “customers who were distributed the recalled lots have been informed and provided guidance to further reach their customers and distribution points with recall notices.The recall was prompted after Hanshaw & Capling Farms of Immokalee, Florida, informed Ray & Mascari Inc. that their facility might have Salmonella contamination. The implicated tomatoes are sold in plastic clamshell containers that are labeled “Packed by Ray & Mascari Inc., Indianapolis, IN 46204,” with lot numbers RM250424 15250.RM250427 15250.
To date, there have been no reported illnesses. ,Consumers who have bought the recalled tomatoes are advised by the FDA to immediately discard them and not to eat them. For additional information or to report illness, customers can call Ray & Mascari Inc. during business hours.
Salmonella is a bacterial infection that is serious and, at times,life- threatening in nature, mainly affecting young children, the aged, and individuals with weakened immune systems. These include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
