Texas Fires Rodney Terry After Disappointing SEC Debut, Sean Miller Set to Take Over

March 24, 2025: Texas has parted ways with men’s basketball coach Rodney Terry after nearly three seasons. Terry initially took over as interim head coach early in the 2022-23 season following Chris Beard’s suspension and eventual dismissal due to domestic violence allegations, which were later dropped.

Terry’s exit follows Texas’ disappointing first SEC season, with a 19-15 overall mark and 6-12 conference record. The Longhorns just qualified for the 2025 NCAA tournament but lost to Xavier in the First Four, 86-80, after giving away a second-half advantage.

Even after guiding Texas to the 2023 Elite Eight and receiving a five-year deal, Terry was unable to sustain that record. His years featured a No. 7 seed in the 2024 NCAA tournament followed by a second-round loss. The program’s highest recruit, five-star candidate Tre Johnson, paced the squad in scoring during the last campaign, but the program was not able to improve on its situation.

For that, Texas will compensate Terry with a $5.4 million buyout. In a statement released, Terry thanked the program for the 13 years he was there, describing the head coaching position as a “dream.”

Xavier’s Sean Miller is likely to inherit the program. Miller, who coached at Arizona before and was under fire during an FBI investigation into college basketball recruiting infractions, just finished his third season back at Xavier. With him at the helm, Xavier made the NCAA tournament in six of his eight seasons overall.

Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte had weighed a hiring of Miller in 2022 but chose Terry following his deep tournament run. Miller will now be charged with directing a program that, for all its resources, has not been able to attain consistent postseason success. The Longhorns have not made the Final Four since 2003 and have lost in the first weekend of the NCAA tournament 13 times since then.
