Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-Mich) on Monday introduced seven long-shot articles of impeachment against President Trump.
It’s the first time this year that House Democrats have tried to impeach the president. Rep. Al Green (D-Texas), who was censured last month for disrupting Trump’s speech to a joint session of Congress, has said he is planning articles of impeachment as well.
Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) also privately floated impeaching Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard over Signalgate.
Thanedar, who drew a second primary challenger Monday morning, wrote in a statement that Trump is “unfit to serve as President and is a clear and present danger to our nation’s constitution and our democracy.”
“We can’t wait for further harm to be caused. Congress has to act,” he continued.
His articles of impeachment charge Trump with obstruction of justice, abuse of power, abuse of authority, bribery, and corruption, primarily concerning the president’s power consolidation and personal finances.
Overview of 7 Articles of Impeachment
Obstruction of Justice and Abuse of Executive Power: Such as denial of due process, illegal deportations, disregard of court orders, and misuse of the Department of Justice.
Usurpation of Appropriations Power: For the destruction of congressionally created agencies and impounding of federal funds.
Abuse of Trade Powers and International Aggression: Such as imposing economically ruinous tariffs and the threat of military invasion against sovereign states
Despite the seriousness of the charges, the impeachment articles are symbolic and highly unlikely to be moved, as both the House and Senate are currently in Republican hands at present. Thanedar’s action also occurs during his political challenges, facing two primary opponents in his re-election campaign
