Love Island, tension soared as viewers speculated over a secret message JoJo appeared to trace on Chris’ hand while the two lay in the dark. Though cameras didn’t fully capture what was written, fans are convinced it was a cryptic reference to Ella with many alleging it read, “E ❤️ U,” suggesting that Ella, 24, has feelings for Chris.
The scene quickly went viral on Reddit and TikTok and sparked a flood of fan theories. One user posted, “I read somewhere that they think she wrote E [heart] U… makes sense to me.” Others suggested the message was JoJo’s way of pointing out Ella’s jealousy, as one fan wrote, “JoJo clocked it by nominating her, but Chris hasn’t caught on yet.”
JoJo is later seen sleeping beside Chris’ bed and whispering, “It makes sense, just think about it,” after drawing the message on his hand. Chris, visibly amused, was seen grinning to himself but this intimate exchange raised eyebrows among fans and even sparked accusations of a rule break.
ITV later confirmed during Late and Live that the interaction did indeed breach the show’s rules. Viewers took to social media to call it out, with one writing, “Surely that’s a rule break?!” and another exclaiming, “JOJO CHRIS???? That’s another rule break.”
The controversy deepened as JoJo and Chris were caught previously holding hands under the covers, further isolating themselves from the group. Ella, who had reportedly hoped to pursue a romance with Chris, is “fuming” as her plans seemingly unravel.
Despite the speculation, JoJo is currently in a relationship with someone who identifies as non-binary, and Chris is straight. Chris’ brother Ben addressed the relationship on Good Morning Britain, saying: “I think they have just found a great friendship due to the fact Chris stuck up for JoJo… I think they’ve got each other’s backs.”
In the most recent episode, Chris scratched JoJo’s back in bed, and the pair exchanged smiles before JoJo returned to her bed. The next morning, Chris confessed he “missed” her in his sleep.
