13 May California, USA: Canadian rapper Tory Lanez, who is serving a 10-year prison term for shooting artist Megan Thee Stallion, was brutally attacked and stabbed 14 times within a California prison on Tuesday morning. The attack took place at the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi, about 75 miles north of Los Angeles.
Prison authorities say that the 32-year-old artist, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, was stabbed repeatedly in the back, torso, head, and face by an inmate. The victim received major injuries, such as collapsed lungs, and was taken to an adjacent hospital in emergency condition.
A post from the official Instagram account of Lanez announced the attack and gave a health update. It revealed that Lanez was temporarily put on a breathing apparatus, but he is now breathing on his own and in stable condition.
“Although he’s in pain, he is speaking normally, in good spirits, and deeply grateful to God that he is recovering,” the post announced.
The California Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections affirmed that the incident took place sometime around 7:20 AM local time, and first aid was given to the victim by prison personnel before paramedics showed up. There has been an official investigation launched into the assault, though the motive behind the attacker is unknown, as asserted by spokesperson Pedro Calderón Michel.
Lanez is incarcerated for shooting rapper Megan Thee Stallion in 2020 at the door of Kylie Jenner’s house party. While testifying in the trial, Megan stated an argument began on a car, and Lanez shot her when he fired the semi-automatic weapon while yelling to “dance” as he pointed the gun in her direction but at the ground. Megan would later have to have surgery on bullet fragments to be extracted from her foot.
Lanez was found guilty in 2023 on three felony counts, including assault by a semi-automatic firearm. Although he was convicted, Lanez insisted that he was innocent and would not make an apology.
The case and Lanez’s incarceration have polarized the hip-hop world, with stars like 50 Cent and Iggy Azalea weighing in on opposite sides and even calling for mercy at sentencing. Lanez had seven top-10 albums in the US before his conviction, and he has continued to tease new music from prison, including an upcoming album called Peterson.
