February 27, Thursday: A petition demanding the revocation of Elon Musk’s Canadian citizenship has garnered over 250,000 signatures from Canadian citizens and residents. The parliamentary petition, which opened for signatures last week, accuses the Tesla CEO of acting against Canada’s national interests and undermining its sovereignty. It specifically cites Musk’s close association with former U.S. President Donald Trump, who has proposed imposing a 25% tariff on Canadian imports and even suggested annexing Canada as the 51st U.S. state.
The petition claims that Musk has used his wealth and influence to interfere in Canadian elections and has aligned himself with a foreign government that threatens Canadian sovereignty. “He has now become a member of a foreign government that is attempting to erase Canadian sovereignty,” the petition states. While Musk has been vocal about his opinions on various issues, he has not publicly addressed the petition. Notably, he deleted a recent social media post, though the reason remains unclear.
Elon Musk, born in Pretoria, South Africa, holds dual citizenship in Canada and the United States. He obtained Canadian citizenship through his mother, Maye Musk, who was born in Canada, and later became a U.S. citizen after moving to the country on a student visa.

Despite the petition’s popularity, it is unlikely to have any legal impact. Under Canadian law, citizenship can only be revoked in cases of fraud, misrepresentation, or concealment of information during the immigration or citizenship application process. The petition, sponsored by New Democratic Party MP Charlie Angus, is largely symbolic and requires at least 500 verified signatures before it can be presented to the House of Commons for debate. The petition remains open until June 20, 2025.
While the petition reflects growing public discontent, it highlights the complexities of citizenship laws and the challenges of addressing grievances through symbolic gestures. For now, Elon Musk’s Canadian citizenship remains intact.
