Seoul, April 30 : North Korea has conducted its inaugural test-firing of weapons from its just-revealed “Choe Hyon-class” warship, state-run media outlet KCNA reported on Wednesday.
The drill involved the firing of cruise missiles, anti-air missiles, and live artillery, and was attended personally by leader Kim Jong Un along with high-ranking military personnel. During his address, Kim underlined the importance of boosting the nation’s naval nuclear force to safeguard maritime sovereignty and reinforce national defense.
South Korean and American intelligence are closely monitoring North Korea’s new naval capabilities, a South Korean Ministry of Defense official said.
The new warship might still not be operational, even with the high-profile unveiling. Satellite images examined by North Korea monitoring site 38 North revealed tugboats towing the 5,000-ton ship, indicating it might not have a working propulsion system yet.
The warship, dedicated to anti-Japanese revolutionary hero Choe Hyon, allegedly carries North Korea’s “strongest” arsenal, according to local media sources. The leader declared that the vessel would formally be handed over to the navy and start its operations by the beginning of next year.
