25 April: US: Molly McGovern, daughter of Rep. Jim McGovern, dies at 23
Molly McGovern, the daughter of Massachusetts Congressman Jim McGovern, died suddenly while visiting Italy. She was 23 years old. Molly had been fighting a rare type of cancer. She had just finished a college semester studying abroad in Australia.

Her father said Molly was brave, hopeful, and strong during her illness. She didn’t let her sickness stop her from living fully. She was in Italy visiting a close friend when she passed away unexpectedly.

Molly had been active in politics with her father. She helped him during elections, went to the 2017 Women’s March, and even met Hillary Clinton when she was a child.

Rep. McGovern said Molly was full of joy and always smiling. He described her as funny, smart, loving, and wise beyond her years.

Other leaders also shared their sadness. House Democratic Whip Katherine Clark said she can’t imagine the pain of losing a child and called Molly a bright light in their lives. Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey said Molly was kind, smart, and caring.

Rep. McGovern had just visited a detention centre in Louisiana earlier this week to help a student from Tufts University. He has been a top Democrat in Congress since 2018.

He ended his statement by saying, “We are proud of her and grateful for the impact she made. We love you, Molly. We miss you already.”
