South Korea is mourning the loss of renowned singer Wheesung, who was found dead in his Seoul apartment on Monday night at the age of 43. The singer, whose real name was Choi Whee-sung, was discovered unconscious by emergency responders after his mother alerted authorities. Local police have confirmed that there were no immediate signs of foul play, though a significant amount of time had elapsed before his body was found. An autopsy has been requested to determine the exact cause of death.
Tajoy Entertainment, his management agency, confirmed his passing in a heartfelt statement on Tuesday. Artist Wheesung has left us,” the agency wrote, adding that his colleagues and team members were in deep sorrow over his untimely death.
His influence extended beyond South Korea, as he performed internationally and collaborated with many artists. He was scheduled to perform alongside singer KCM in Daegu this coming weekend.

Despite his success, Wheesung faced personal struggles in recent years. In 2021, he was handed a suspended two-year prison sentence for the illegal use of propofol, an anesthetic that has been widely abused in the entertainment industry. The drug was notably linked to the 2009 death of pop icon Michael Jackson.
His legal troubles followed a series of incidents in 2020, where he was found unconscious on two separate occasions due to overdoses of etomidate, another sleep-inducing drug similar to propofol. These issues significantly impacted his career and public image.

Following the news of Wheesung’s passing, tributes from fellow artists and fans flooded social media. Rapper Verbal Jint shared a black square on Instagram with the caption, “Every moment we shared was an honor, and I’m grateful. You’ve worked so hard, rest in peace, Wheesung.”
Singer Yoon Min-soo also paid tribute, writing,
“Wheesung, let’s sing and make music freely in that place. I won’t forget your pure and clear heart.”

“It’s shocking and sad. I’m thankful for the music that accompanied me through the good memories of my youth,” he wrote.

Wheesung’s death is the latest in a troubling pattern within South Korea’s entertainment industry, which has seen several young stars pass away under tragic circumstances.
