5 May Houston, Texas: A deadly shooting interrupted a family barbecue in southeast Houston early Sunday morning, killing one person and injuring at least 15 others. The shooting happened shortly before 1 a.m. on Cherryhill Avenue, when police responded to several 911 calls reporting shots fired.
Per Houston Police Department Assistant Chief Patricia Cantu, police officers were there in minutes to discover multiple victims. Emergency workers quickly transported the injured to a nearby Jack in the Box restaurant to initiate treatment and triage. An 18-year-old male was later confirmed dead, while others between the ages of 16 and 40 were taken to area hospitals, some in critical condition.
The violence supposedly started when an “uninvited guest” showed up at the party. When he was asked to leave, the man supposedly got back to his car and began firing, creating a wild scene where shots were being fired. “The scene sort of spilled over into several blocks due to people running and scrambling,” Houston police spokeswoman Jodi Silva said.
It is unknown at this time whether the suspect brought the weapon on his person at first or accessed it in his vehicle. Officers continue to explore if the gunman had a connection to the victims before he pulled the trigger. As of Sunday evening, no suspect had been apprehended, and officials had yet to reveal a potential motive.
The names and complete medical conditions of the injured persons have yet to be disclosed. Police are appealing to the public to report anything they may know about the shooting as they strive to piece together the sequence of events leading up to one of Houston’s bloodiest incidents in recent times.
Both officials and community members alike mourned and were concerned over the attack, which transformed a serene family gathering into a nightmare of terror and confusion. The investigation is still ongoing.
