1 May California: Jeff Sperbeck, one of the most respected NFL agents, a longtime business associate, and a close friend of Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway, passed away at the age of 62 following a tragic golf cart fall in La Quinta, California.
The accident is said to have happened Saturday evening when Elway was operating the cart, with Sperbeck riding with him. TMZ says Sperbeck slipped and hit his head on the pavement. Though he was put on life support, he died early Wednesday at a Palm Springs hospital, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office reports.
In an emotionally moving statement, Elway was heartbroken, referring to Sperbeck as not only a partner but a brother to him in life. “There are no words to truly express the profound sadness I feel with the sudden loss of someone who has meant so much to me,” Elway stated.
No foul play or neglect is suspected, although an official inquiry is in progress.
Sperbeck also took a vital part in Elway’s career post-football life by co-managing business opportunities like car lots, restaurants, and the 7Cellars label he co-created with Rob Mondavi Jr. In addition to Elway, he acted for more than 100 NFL athletes over the duration of his career, spanning 30 years.
A sports marketing trailblazer, Sperbeck co-established Sullivan & Sperbeck, led Octagon’s football branch, then developed The NOVO Agency before its eventual combination with Rep1 Sports in 2018.
His family made a sincere statement, grieving the “unimaginable loss” and expressing their gratitude to friends and supporters for their prayers and privacy during these trying times.
