February 14, South Carolina: The ex-husband of Susan Smith, the South Carolina woman who drowned her two young sons in 1994, has revealed her chillingly casual apology following the horrific crime.
Susan Smith, now 52, was denied parole in November by the South Carolina Department of Probation, Parole, and Pardon Services. She has spent over 30 years in prison for the murders of her children—3-year-old Michael and 14-month-old Alexander Smith.
Speaking to “Dateline” ahead of an episode airing Friday at 9 p.m. EST, David Smith shared his ex-wife’s unsettling response when he confronted her about the killings.
“She just casually, like you and I sitting here, said, ‘I’m sorry,’ and that was about as far as it went,” he recalled. “If I had done what she did, I would have been on my knees, begging for forgiveness.”

When he pressed her on why she killed their sons, Susan simply responded, “I don’t know why, but I’m sorry,” David said.
Former Union County prosecutor Tommy Pope, now a South Carolina state representative, previously told Fox News Digital that Susan was having an affair at the time with the son of a wealthy businessman. A week before the murders, her lover wrote a letter explaining that while he was romantically interested in her, he was not willing to raise children.
During her parole hearing last year, Susan appeared emotional and tearful, expressing regret for her actions.
“I know that what I did was horrible,” she said. “I’m sorry that I put them through that. … I wish I could take that back, I really do. … I was just scared. I didn’t know how to tell the people that loved them that they would never see them again. … I’m sorry. I know that’s not enough … just words, but they come from my heart.”
Despite her expressions of remorse, her parole was denied, and she remains incarcerated for the shocking crime that captured national attention three decades ago.
