At least 10 people in California and Nevada have been sent to the hospital because of a listeria outbreak. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says the illness is linked to prepackaged, ready-to-eat foods made by Fresh & Ready Foods LLC, a company based in San Fernando, California.

These foods were distributed from April 18 through April 28, 2025, in Arizona, California, Nevada, and Washington. They were also distributed in all sorts of places like stores, hospitals, hotels, gas stations, airports, and on airplanes. The products were sold under many different names, including Fresh & Ready Foods, City Point Market Fresh Food to Go, and Fresh Take Crave Away. All of these products had “use by” dates ranging from April 22 to May 19, 2025.

The FDA is advising everyone not to consume, sell, or serve these foods. If you have them at home, discard them. Also, sanitize any kitchen surfaces, containers, or utensils that might have come into contact with these foods to prevent the spread of bacteria.

Listeria monocytogenes is the germ that causes listeriosis, which is a severe illness. It can be extremely harmful to pregnant women, older people, newborns, and individuals with compromised immune systems. Symptoms can include fever, chills, muscle pain, nausea, and diarrhea. If you have consumed these foods and are experiencing illness, you should seek out a doctor immediately.

In 2024, the FDA detected signs of listeria at the Fresh & Ready Foods plant during a routine inspection. But then they did not have sufficient evidence to connect it with any illness. The case was reopened in April 2025, when genomic testing revealed that the listeria detected in the plant was the same strain that had caused people to fall ill.

So far, no deaths have been reported, but the FDA says the outbreak is still ongoing and more cases could happen. The FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are working together to learn more and make sure the food supply is safe.

If you think you bought any of these foods, check the packaging for the brand name and “use by” dates. For more information and a full list of recalled products, visit the FDA’s official website.
