May 12, Denver — The Colorado Rockies have parted ways with manager Bud Black following a dismal 7-33 start to the 2025 MLB season, one of the worst 40-game records in Major League Baseball history. The decision came after a rare 9-3 victory over the San Diego Padres on Sunday, which ended an eight-game losing streak but was insufficient to salvage Black’s tenure.

Black, the franchise’s winningest manager, compiled a 544-690 record over nine seasons with the Colorado Rockies. Despite leading the team to playoff appearances in 2017 and 2018, the Rockies have struggled in recent years, culminating in consecutive seasons with over 100 losses. The team’s performance this season, including a 21-0 loss to the Padres on Saturday, prompted the front office to make a change.

In a statement, Rockies CEO Dick Monfort acknowledged the team’s ongoing poor performance and emphasized the need for progress and evaluation moving forward. “We appreciate Bud’s contributions to the organization, but the current state of the team necessitates a change,” Monfort said.

The Rockies’ decision to dismiss Black underscores the challenges faced by the team in recent years and the organization’s commitment to turning the franchise around. As the interim coaching staff takes the helm, the focus will be on player development and restoring competitiveness for the remainder of the 2025 season.
