Supermodel Christie Brinkley is reflecting on her high-profile marriage to music legend Billy Joel ahead of the release of her memoir, Uptown Girl, hitting shelves on April 29. The 71-year-old former model opened up in a new interview with a news channel about the highs and lows of their relationship and the emotional moment that led to its end.
Brinkley and Joel, once considered an iconic ‘80s power couple, were married from 1985 to 1994 and shared what Brinkley calls an “amazing” and “wonderful” time together. “We were such nomads, gypsies between his job and mine, we were seeing the world… it was wonderful, really wonderful,” she shared.
Despite the glamour and deep connection they shared, Brinkley says Joel’s drinking habits became an unavoidable wedge in their marriage. She described several painful incidents when Joel would disappear for days while drinking, even missing their daughter Alexa Ray’s fifth birthday party and a family Thanksgiving celebration.
In her memoir, Brinkley reveals that the final straw came during a rehearsal at their home when Joel behaved irrationally and accused his bandmates of eating pasta that he had already eaten himself. “He was acting delusional in a way I’d never seen before,” she recalled. The next day, Brinkley told him she wanted a divorce.
“To be clear, I never wanted to end things with Billy,” she told Page Six. “I read every self-help book I could find… we went to see a string of psychiatrists, psychologists, and other medical doctors.” Despite trying to salvage the relationship, Brinkley ultimately decided to leave for her well-being.
Still, Brinkley maintains a respectful tone when speaking of her ex-husband. “He’s the father of my firstborn, and we spent such great formative years together. And I’ll love him forever,” she said.
An excerpt from Uptown Girl shared with People reveals just how deeply the drinking affected their relationship: “His drinking was bigger than both of us.” She adds, “That’s the worst kind of loneliness—when you just can’t make it work together.”
