Canada Hits Back as Trump Imposes Sweeping Tariffs

Read Time:1 Minute, 54 Second

Ottawa – Canada struck back hard against the new tariff set by President Donald Trump. Former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland called the tariffs “utter madness” and stated it was “a betrayal of America’s closest friend.”

On Sunday, Trump signed an executive order that added a new 25% tariff on all imports from Canada and Mexico. He also put a 10% tax on Chinese imports and Canadian oil. The tariffs face backlash and Freeland has given statements warning that Canada will not back down.

In Freeland’s defense, “It Is an Act of Economic Warfare,” It is clear that she believes the tariffs set by Trump will have negative economic effects on Canadians. She also stated, “Americans will be astonished by the Canadian response.

Alongside Freeland, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced 25% tariffs on American goods worth 155 billion dollars Canadian at the same time and added that the previous statement covers a range of beverages, cosmetics, and paper products worth 30 billion CAD. He further stated that vehicles, steel, aluminum, dairy, and aerospace products will fall under a second list.

Freeland, who recently announced her campaign for Prime Minister also made a statement saying “We are the largest market for the United States larger than China, Japan, the UK, and France combined. It doesn’t make sense to punch us in the face.”

This statement only raises more questions and ultimately she seems to be advocating for better Canadian economic policy. “By putting tariffs on Canadian goods, they are hurting Americans,” She added.

The escalating trade war has sparked concerns among businesses and policymakers. Canada is the largest export market for 36 U.S. states, and Mexico is America’s top trading partner.

Trump remained defiant. “We can play the game all they want,” he said Sunday, adding that he plans to speak with Canadian and Mexican leaders.

Mexico has yet to announce specific retaliatory measures but confirmed it would impose its tariffs.

With tensions rising, economic analysts warn of severe disruptions in North American trade, potentially impacting supply chains and consumer prices. The coming days will be crucial in determining whether the two allies can de-escalate or if this standoff will deepen into a full-blown trade war.
