California Runner Creates Eco-Friendly Solution to Marathon Waste Crisis
During the 2019 California International Marathon, Kristina Smithe noticed the large amount of disposable cups given out to runners. As she collected water cups to stay hydrated, she became concerned about the waste produced. After the race, she calculated that about 9,000 runners and 17 aid stations used nearly 150,000 single-use cups. This huge number of disposable cups contributes significantly to environmental pollution.
Devoted to finding a better solution, Kristina invented a reusable cup designed specifically for races. Her invention aims to reduce waste and help event organizers manage hydration stations more sustainably. The reusable cup is:
- Lightweight
- Easy to carry
- Reusable multiple times during the race
Kristina’s innovative idea is gaining attention in the running community as more events look to reduce their environmental impact. Many race organizers are now considering adopting her reusable cup to make marathons greener nationwide.
This new approach not only helps cut down on trash but also encourages runners to think about their environmental footprint. By changing small habits, such as using reusable cups, large events can become more eco-friendly.
