LOS ANGELES: Bestselling author and journalist Jillian Lauren Shriner was shot and injured by police on Wednesday during a confrontation in her residential neighborhood of Eagle Rock, Los Angeles. Authorities allege Shriner, 51, pointed a handgun at officers and fired, prompting police to return fire.

According to Los Angeles Police Department communications director Jennifer Forkish, officers were assisting the California Highway Patrol in a search for three suspects involved in a hit-and-run incident on a nearby freeway. The suspects had abandoned their vehicle and fled on foot into the neighborhood.

As officers searched the area, they encountered Shriner in the backyard of her home, armed with a handgun. “The officers ordered Shriner to drop the handgun numerous times,” the LAPD said in a statement. “However, she refused. Shriner then pointed the handgun at the officers.”

Surveillance video reportedly shows Jillian Lauren Shriner ignoring repeated commands to disarm before allegedly opening fire. Officers shot her in response. No officers or bystanders were injured.

Shriner was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries and later booked on a charge of attempted murder. Jail records indicate she was released on bond the same evening. A 9 mm firearm was recovered from her home.

The LAPD confirmed that Shriner was not connected to the hit-and-run investigation and that she was in her backyard when the confrontation took place.

Jillian Lauren Shriner is married to Scott Shriner, the bassist of the rock band Weezer. The band is scheduled to perform at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival this weekend, though it remains unclear whether Scott Shriner will join. A source close to the band confirmed the performance but did not comment on Scott’s participation.
