Former Sen. Bob Menendez Sentenced to 11 Years, Calls Case a ‘Political Witch Hunt’

Read Time:1 Minute, 31 Second

Former Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) has been sentenced to 11 years in prison after being convicted on corruption charges. However, U.S. District Judge Sidney H. Stein allowed Menendez to remain free until June, when he must report to the Bureau of Prisons, allowing him time to support his wife, who faces related charges.

Outside the Manhattan courthouse, Menendez maintained his innocence, vowing to appeal. “This whole process has been a political witch hunt,” he said. He accused federal prosecutors of using illegal evidence and claimed an FBI agent lied under oath, though he provided no further details. Additionally, Menendez alleged that former U.S. Attorney Damian Williams, who prosecuted the case, sought “political scalps” in preparation for a future political run.

Menendez, a veteran Democratic politician, went further by aligning himself with former President Donald Trump, echoing his long-standing claims of political bias within the Justice Department. “President Trump was right. This process is political, and it’s corrupted to the core. I hope President Trump cleans up the cesspool and restores the integrity of the system,” he declared in his remarks, later shared on social media.

Once a powerful figure in Washington, Menendez served as mayor of Union City, a three-term senator from New Jersey, and chair of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations before his indictment in 2023. His charges, which included accepting bribes in the form of gold bars and a luxury car, led to mounting pressure from within his party to resign, though he resisted until his conviction in 2024.

Menendez is not the only high-profile Democrat to decry federal investigations. New York City Mayor Eric Adams, currently facing his indictment—the first for a sitting mayor in the city’s history has similarly dismissed the charges against him as “entirely false” and politically motivated.
