16 May California, USA: In a significant development for cult classic series Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans, Hulu recently revealed that Ryan Kiera Armstrong, who has previously appeared in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew and American Horror Story, will play the new Slayer in their new reboot pilot. The news broke on May 15, 2025, and created quite a buzz in entertainment circles.
The original Buffy, Sarah Michelle Gellar, will be returning to her legendary role, with Gellar also being an executive producer on the show. In a moving Instagram video posted Thursday, Gellar announced the news of the casting to Armstrong, commending her remarkable talent and emotional range.
From the minute I saw Ryan’s audition, I knew there was only one girl that I would want by my side,” Gellar explained. “To have that kind of emotional intelligence and ability at such a young age is a gift. The bonus is that her smile lights up even the darkest room.
The pilot, which is now known as the “Untitled Buffyverse Pilot,” is produced in association with 20th Television and Searchlight TV. Nora and Lilla Zuckerman, who have writing credits on TV shows like Poker Face and Fringe, are penning the series. Acclaimed Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao (Nomadland) is set to direct and executive produce.
Though most details are still on the down-low, the reboot will reportedly see a rebuilt Sunnydale, the fictional town destroyed in the original finale. Gellar suggested this in her Instagram video, calling Armstrong to “New Sunnydale.”
Armstrong’s past credits include Fern on Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, guest spots on Netflix’s Anne With an E, and other significant films such as The Tomorrow War and It: Chapter Two. She is also signed with Linden Entertainment and Innovative Artist Group.
The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer show pioneered something new in challenging the idea of a single Slayer and featuring several possible Slayers during its last season (2002-2003). This reboot will continue that legacy and bring that iconic Buffyverse to a whole new generation of viewers.
