May 14, Nebraska: John Ewing Jr. has made history by winning Omaha’s mayoral election, becoming the city’s first Black mayor. He defeated the Republican Jean Stothert, who has served three terms, in a race that saw Democrats capitalize on dissatisfaction with President Donald Trump’s agenda
Ewing received approximately 56% of the vote compared to Stothert’s 44%, leading by just under 11,000 votes.
John Ewing Jr. won the mayoral race by a significant margin, leading by 9,000 votes as of the latest count. Ewing is the first Black mayor in Omaha’s history, marking a significant milestone for the city. Ewing’s campaign emphasized economic growth, affordable housing, and equitable development.
He plans on expanding Omaha’s Urban Core to create high-paying jobs and strengthen communities.
Jean Stothert, the incumbent mayor, conceded the race and congratulated Ewing. She deflected on her 12 years of service and the progress made during her tenure.
Ewing has over four decades of experience in public service, including nearly 25 years as a member of the Omaha Police Department, where he rose to the rank of Deputy Police Chief. He has also been the Douglas County Treasurer for 17 years. His extensive background in law enforcement and community involvement has been a key part of his campaign narrative.
Ewing will be sworn in on the 9th of June. He has plans to focus on building a strong team and addressing the city’s challenges. Main challenges include infrastructure and youth development.
