Veteran soap opera actress Denise Alexander, best known for her iconic role as Dr. Lesley Webber on General Hospital, has passed away at 85.

Denise Alexander, a favorite on daytime television known for playing Dr. Lesley Webber on General Hospital, has died at the age of 85. She died on March 5, 2025, but news of her death was announced on May 9. The cause of death was not shared.

Alexander was born on November 11, 1939, in New York City, and began acting at the age of six by performing in radio plays. As a teenager, she had appeared in thousands of radio and television programs, including a role in the 1956 film Crime in the Streets alongside John Cassavetes.

Alexander’s soap opera career began in September 1960 with The Clear Horizon as Lois Adams. She became well known for her role as Susan Hunter Martin on Days of Our Lives in the years 1966 through 1973, where she was part of dramatic storylines, often portraying a complex character.

In 1973, she joined the cast of General Hospital, where she would take on the character of Dr. Lesley Webber, who would become a major part of the storylines for the show and the love triangle between her character, Monica Quartermaine, with Rick Webber. She received a nomination for a Daytime Emmy in 1976.

After leaving General Hospital in 1984, Alexander returned in 1996 with a dramatic story arc where her character came back.

After returning to the show, she continued to appear until 2009, with guest appearances in 2013, 2017, 2019, and 2021.

In addition to acting, Alexander was an accomplished photographer and producer, often collaborating with her husband Richard A. Colla, a director who passed away in 2021. She is survived by her stepdaughter, Elizabeth Colla.

Genie Francis, who played Alexander’s television daughter Laura on General Hospital, honored her saying, “I loved her. She loved me… Some of my acting, some of my — how I acted — was directly imprinted upon me by Denise Alexander. And she was very, very nice to me as I was growing up.”

Denise Alexander’s everlasting mark on daytime television lives on and influences fans and actors.
