Former judge and Fox News host Jeanine Pirro has been appointed by President Trump as the interim U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia.

President Donald Trump nominated Jeanine Pirro, a former Fox News television host and seasoned legal professional, to be the acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, following Ed Martin’s withdrawal from the same position under U.S. Senate support.

Jeanine Pirro is a qualified legal professional for the position. She was formerly the District Attorney for Westchester County, New York, and was the first woman elected to that position. While she was the District Attorney, she established the first Domestic Violence Bureau in the country and took a serious interest in pursuing domestic abuse cases.

Pirro is also known to many from her television days as the host of “Justice with Judge Jeanine,” and as co-host of “The Five” on Fox News.

President Trump praised Pirro’s credentials and noted Pirro is “in a class by herself,” adding that she has taken a path with her ground-breaking work on behalf of crime victims. Trump previously tapped a former Fox News television host for a high profile position with the administration.

Pirro’s appointment follows the withdrawal of Ed Martin, whose nomination was resoundingly opposed because of his history of controversial actions and words. Martin, a former Missouri Republican Party chair, was the interim U.S. Attorney for D.C.

His term was not without controversy, including the firing of prosecutors working on January 6 cases and the dismantling of the prosecution unit focused on the Capitol siege. Martin’s actions and membership, such as support for January 6 defendants, created a lack of Senate support for his confirmation.

While Pirro’s legal experience is widespread, her shift from media to a prominent legal position has fueled debate regarding the confluence of media and politics.

Critics question the objectivity of the Justice Department under such appointments, while others point out that her legal knowledge and public exposure render her a suitable candidate.

Pirro’s nomination as acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia will require Senate approval. Confirmed, she would oversee federal prosecutions in the capital city of the nation, high-stakes and politically charged, particularly Washington, D.C.-related cases.

This latest signal of continuing influence of personalities in the media over political appointees comes on top of unease over direction at the Justice Department under this presidency.
