Paris FC Secures Historic Promotion to Ligue 1 After 46-Year Absence

Read Time:1 Minute, 43 Second
Paris FC will return to France’s top football division next season after securing promotion to Ligue 1 for the first time in 46 years. The milestone was confirmed on Friday after a 1-1 draw against Martigues ensured a top-two finish in Ligue 2, mathematically guaranteeing their ascent.

The promotion marks a major turning point in the club’s history, as they prepare to join fellow capital club and reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain in Ligue 1. This will be the first time since the 1989-90 season that two clubs from Paris will compete in the French top flight in the same campaign.

Currently second in the Ligue 2 standings behind leaders Lorient, who have also confirmed promotion, Paris FC’s rise reflects a period of transformation and ambition. The club’s recent acquisition by the family of French billionaire Bernard Arnault has brought renewed focus, resources, and aspirations. Arnault has publicly stated his goal of elevating Paris FC to a club that can eventually challenge for domestic and European honors.

In line with their growing ambitions, Paris FC has also announced plans to move from their current home at Stade Charléty to Stade Jean-Bouin starting next season. The new venue, which holds over 20,000 spectators, is located just across the street from PSG’s iconic Parc des Princes, symbolizing the beginning of a potentially fierce intra-city rivalry.

This promotion also revives memories of when the French capital supported multiple top-flight teams, including the now-defunct Racing Paris 1, which last competed in Ligue 1 in 1990. Since then, PSG has enjoyed a monopolistic presence, dominating the football landscape in Paris. The arrival of Paris FC promises to shift that dynamic.

With renewed financial backing, a new home ground, and a place secured among France’s football elite, Paris FC now faces the significant challenge of competing at the highest level. But after nearly half a century of absence, the club and its supporters are eager to write a new chapter in the annals of French football.
