26 April, New York: Ex-New York Rep. George Santos was sentenced to 87 months (7 years) in prison for a string of fraudulent activity, including wire fraud and identity theft. Prosecutors described his actions as an even larger scheme to steal from campaign funds, deceive political contributors, and manipulate his family members for personal gain
. Santos, 36, had pleaded guilty to the charges in August 2023, admitting to his role in the long-term dishonest practices. The judge made the ruling following a tearful apology by Santos, in which he confessed to having betrayed his constituents’ trust. Despite his tearful apology, U.S. District Judge Joanna Seybert was not moved, explaining that Santos was worthy of the lengthy prison term.
In a social media message after sentencing, Santos lashed out against the ruling as politically motivated and urged former President Donald Trump to step in to save him. He also apologized for what he did and wanted a sentence to enable him to demonstrate that he was still able to contribute constructively to society. His lawyers had earlier asked for a minimum two-year sentence, contending that his actions were not motivated by malice but by desperation, citing his clean criminal record.
Still, prosecutors and U.S. Attorney John J. Durham stood their ground, with Durham saying the sentence was “justice.” He pointed out that Santos had finally been held responsible for the damage he did to numerous victims, including campaign contributors, political parties, government offices, and even his relatives.
Santos, who had originally reported receiving $200,000 from a documentary maker, did not pay back any of the restitution figures before his sentencing. In interviews, he acknowledged he could not afford to pay back now but was making efforts towards restitution.
