Cabot Creamery Recalls Over 1,700 Pounds of Butter Due to Bacterial Contamination Concerns

Read Time:1 Minute, 29 Second

Cabot Creamery has issued a voluntary recall of more than 1,700 pounds of its butter products after routine testing revealed elevated levels of coliform bacteria, which can indicate possible fecal contamination.

According to documentation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the recall specifically targets the company’s 8-ounce packages of Extra Creamy Premium Butter, Sea Salted variety. A total of 189 cases are involved in the recall.

The issue was identified by Agri-Mark, the parent company of Cabot Creamery, which said it has pinpointed the source of the contamination and implemented corrective actions. Importantly, the company clarified that no other products in its lineup were affected.

Although the presence of coliform bacteria does not typically cause illness, it can be a red flag indicating that harmful pathogens, including strains of E. coli, could be present. The FDA categorized the recall as a Class III recall, meaning the affected product is not likely to cause any serious health effects. Cabot Creamery confirmed that no illnesses or customer complaints have been reported.

The recalled butter was distributed to stores and distributors in seven states:

  • Arkansas
  • Connecticut
  • Maine
  • New Hampshire
  • New York
  • Pennsylvania
  • Vermont

Cabot Creamery noted that 99.5% of the recalled butter was successfully retrieved before it reached consumers. Only 17 packages are believed to have made it to retail shelves, all of which were sold in Vermont.

While Agri-Mark did not release an official public notice or press statement about the recall, consumers who may have purchased the affected product are advised to either discard it or return it to the place of purchase for a refund or replacement.
