Jan 27, 2025: A 3.8-magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of southern Maine on Monday Tremors were felt in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire.
The earthquake, which occurred at 10:22 a.m. local time, was centered near York Harbor and had a depth of approximately 8.2 miles. According to the latest reports, there have been no injuries or damage reported from the earthquake.The USGS reported it first as a 4.1, then revised the measurement down to 3.8.
The residents from southern New England felt that ground shaking or heard the loud rumbling noise and even compared it with brief intense shakings of around 5-10 seconds.
The Maine Geological Survey’s online database says that this was tied for the third-strongest earthquake with an epicenter in Maine since 1997. Experts point out that although smaller earthquakes are quite common in Maine, a 3-point magnitude earthquake is pretty rare, happening only about once a year in the state.
As of Monday morning, emergency management officials in the affected states said there were no reports of damage, injuries, or deaths; and according to the U.S. Tsunami Warning Center, there is no tsunami threat currently in New England.
